Rockroot is a place where I try to build useful things and share what the work teaches.

First-hand work.

I document the projects I am working on such as building a cabin on the Canadian Shield, learning to live with off-grid solar, running a homelab, testing low-power field sensors, making games, and planning the systems around them.

Each experiment is different, though some may share some similarities. They may include measurements, diagrams, photographs, decisions, setbacks, and changes of plan as the work develops. Many projects are still early on, or only theorized. I hope to share this with you as I work through each one.

Why publish it?

I started Rockroot to share each experiment, and to be a motivator for myself to keep going. Each experiment is a clear record of practical work that often disappears into the back of my mind, mostly as half-remembered decisions. If something here is interesting to someone, or even useful to someone else, that would be a great outcome. But I'm mostly just keeping a record for myself.

What's with the name?

Rockroot is a combination of "rock" and "root". As I was working on building my house in the Canadian Shield, we had to dig into a lot of ground. As we dug, we realized the ground was about three-quarters rocks and the rest was filled with roots. I thought it was a fitting name and an homage to the work in the forest.
