The idea
Reuse an old Kindle as a passive screen for homelab health, storage, weather, and the occasional photo. This connects my Ansible homelab ↗ to a practical home use case.
Steps
- Jailbreak my old Kindle.
- Install the hotfix, KUAL, and SSH access, then block automatic updates so they cannot undo the jailbreak.
- Build a small homelab service that renders a 600 × 800 grayscale PNG.
- Add a Kindle script that fetches the image and refreshes the screen on a timer.
- Start with one useful status view, then tune refresh timing and power use.
Inspired by mxdcodes’ old Kindle homelab dashboard on Reddit ↗. This is a smaller companion to the colour e-ink home display ↗.
