An old Kindle,
with a new life.

An old Kindle takes on a new life as a homelab dashboard.

The idea

Reuse an old Kindle as a passive screen for homelab health, storage, weather, and the occasional photo. This connects my Ansible homelab ↗ to a practical home use case.

Steps

  1. Jailbreak my old Kindle.
  2. Install the hotfix, KUAL, and SSH access, then block automatic updates so they cannot undo the jailbreak.
  3. Build a small homelab service that renders a 600 × 800 grayscale PNG.
  4. Add a Kindle script that fetches the image and refreshes the screen on a timer.
  5. Start with one useful status view, then tune refresh timing and power use.

Inspired by mxdcodes’ old Kindle homelab dashboard on Reddit ↗. This is a smaller companion to the colour e-ink home display ↗.
