Growing

Greenhouse automation

We want to build a greenhouse where we can grow more of our own food and use simple automation to help it through the season.

The greenhouse is still an idea, but the goal is real. It’s our first real experiment in growing food past a small raised garden bed.

Greenhouses require monitoring and reacting to temperature, humidity, and soil. I think that some of the monitoring work could be managed with sensors and small controls. The LoRa field network ↗ could carry temperature, soil, water, and battery readings beyond Wi-Fi, while the Ansible Homelab ↗ could store those readings, monitor the system, and let us know when something needs attention.

One useful reference is this first smart greenhouse system shared with the Home Assistant community ↗.
